One team over the course of 25 years went from national championships and being nationally relevant year in and year out to complete irrelevancy, and that team is Nebraska.
Oklahoma will be joining them shortly. New, tougher conference. Defensive coach in an offensive game. Recruiting will become a problem just like what happened to Nebraska.
This is what Cowherd just said, almost verbatim.
I don’t agree with him, but this narrative is out there. Many national people expect OU to fall off a cliff.
I think OU and NU are two completely different situations, and I think OU can be successful in the SEC. We’ll see.

One major difference is that Nebraska cut itself off to its recruiting pipeline, whereas Oklahoma is fully connected to Texas through conference and geography. In terms of hiring the right coach, that goes for any major program, as far as Brent we will find out this year whether he is the right hire. Last year was a Mulligan.

There are potential similarities and you are correct time will tell. The conference change and step up in competition will be much more difficult than members on this board think.
It will be interesting to see if BV continues down the Scott Frost at Nebraska path with losing close games which should be won.

Meanwhile
Texas literally is Nebraska
At least on the field
Exact same program since they last met.
But one is perpetually shaded with an up arrow

He’s hated them for a lot longer than that. He was a local radio guy in Portland in the 90s and early 2000s, he was giddy when USC beat OU in 2004. Spent all week talking about how overrated OU was. For some reason he latched onto USC with literally zero connections

Was Texas ever really considered in the same class as Nebraska, OU, Ohio State, Norte Dame, Michigan, USC, and Alabama?
I always had UT in the next tier down.

Has anyone seen the NU facilities. Can't even compare the two schools NU is light years from OU. A marginal increase in defense and we arr 10-2 last year. No different next year.

We’ve heard this comparison for years during realignment talk. It’s not comparable at all.
Comparing the situation of OU in the SEC and Nebraska in the B1G is Apple’s and oranges comparison. It’s completely invalid.

As long as Oklahoma keeps recruiting top 10 recruit classes we'll be relevant in the playoff.

As always, Cowherd puts very little thought into anything he says. And who is the Nebraska AD from this century who is on the same level as Joe C? Yeah, I didn't think so. Apparently, an elite AD means nothing.
When Baker came into the League, Cowherd said he was the next Johnny Manziel. Baker ended those comparisons after his rookie year. However, Cowherd still took a victory lap since Baker's career hasn't been what one would expect of the top pick of the Draft. Of course, you can make that same prediction for every first-overall pick and be right 50% of the time.

Cowturd is a troll.
He knows literally nothing about college football. He wants to be a gambling guru but he stinks at that too.
He’s only still around because he gets people to listen to his BS just do that can get mad at him.
I don’t know if anybody who takes him seriously or is a real fan.

I agree, Cowherd isn’t a college football guy, he spends most of his time studying and working on NFL and NBA.
For some reason, even before Lincoln left Norman, Cowherd always seemed to root against OU. Now, with Lincoln there in LA with him, he’s even more of a Sooner hater.
It’s always better when Klatt is with him, so Joel can reel him in when he starts talking nonsense.

OU and NU are NOT similarly situated. NU has never had the recruiting locale of OU. NU was able to win with an offensive system that could use slow, local O linemen that did not have to have the athleticism for pass blocking. They could develop them over 4 or 5 years. NU just had to get running backs, QBs and a few defensive players from out of state.
NU recruited nationally, but they actually would use a lot of local players back in a time when the systems in place allowed for it. As an example, NU often had local WRs because that worked for their option running game. So, NU did not have to beat the better teams for a WR recruit because NU wasn't going after a 4 or 5 star WR.
Now, NU has to compete for the top athletic offensive left tackle. NU has to compete for best cornerbacks. NU has to compete with the top teams for the best PASSING QB. NU never had to compete with other teams for a QB because they were going after an option QB. During NU's run even OU had moved on from the option and was going after passing QBs.
So, what has really hurt NU is the change of the game and the reality that teams have systems that employ the same type of athlete. So, now everyone is going after the same profile of player at positions.
NU cannot build a team like they used to that would have quite different players than most other teams. This gave NU a niche advantage that they no longer have.
OU is better situated to compete for recruits due to our proximity with Texas which gives us a base for a large number of our recruits, including QBs and WRs among other positions.

I like listening to Cowherd on subjects not related to CFB. He can be witty and incisive. But when he starts trashing OU or waxing poetic about SC, I switch to Dan Patrick, who's always good.
