The 3 Principles of Mind, Consciousness & Thought [Steve M Nash] (2024)

An Inside-Out Understanding of Life, You, Everyone…

So, what are the 3 Principles, and why do they matter? (Note: The Three Principles is also referred to as the Inside-Out Understanding.)

  • Discover the answer to this question in the words of Sydney Banks himself
  • Also find three Principles videos from Michael Neill and George Pransky
  • And I share what the ThreePrinciples mean to me (and why they matter)

And, for a bonus, I’ve compiled some wonderful3 Principles quotes too.

But first, the 3 principles are aboutYOU – how you work, how life works;how YOU are the answer you’ve always been looking for. Yes, the 3 Principles are a pointer to ‘what lies within’, to ‘the answer’ you seek!…

What Are The3 Principles? – What Sydney Banks Said…

Sydney Banksfirst formulated what has come to be known as the three principles understanding (aka Inside-Out Understanding, Innate Health, & Health Realization), in the 1970s. So who better to talk about the three principles than Syd.

The 3 Principles of Mind, Consciousness and Thought, then, in his words:

MIND is the universal intelligence behind life, consciousness creates an awareness of what we call reality, and thought is the power to create our moment to moment existence.
– Sydney Banks [more 3 principles quote below]

And now a video of Sydney Banks talking about the 3 principles:

Unlikely Hero: The Remarkable Story of Sydney Banks

Yes, once upon a time in Canada– so the story goes – in the early 1970s, a Scottish welder called Sydney Banks had a profound spiritual insight. (As you sometimes do, eh!) And Syd saw for himself the truth of the human experience – he recognised the source of all suffering, as well as the source of all healing; and his life, and the lives of those around him changed forever…

Naturally enough, Syd decided to share this powerful insight with the world.

So Syd formulated what’s now known as The Three Principles*, and he started to share them with mental health professionals, with laymen and women, with spiritual gurus… with anyone, actually, interested in the truth of their own experience. Syd talked, Syd shared, Syd wrote books on the subject (e.g. The Enlightened Gardener.)

But most of all Syd encouraged everyone to see (and feel) it for themselves…

The 3 Principles – What I, Steve M Nash, Say…

The 3 principles are a description of the Inside-Out nature of the human experience. They not only reveal how human life is created, but completely explain the ‘madness’ (love, inspiration… everything!) behind all human existence. (Quite!)

So, asan individual, then (and to say the very least!):

  • If you choose to continually ‘look in the Inside Out direction’ that these three principles are pointing to, choose to stay in the conversation,
  • then your life could quite well transform beyond recognition, beyond anything you thought possible.

All that is possible via learning more about the 3 Principles, learning more about yourself. Because, as simply as I can put it:

  1. The 3 Principles point to the truenature of ALL life
  2. The principles go by the words, Mind, Consciousness and Thought. With…

Thought – the ability to create, through our thinking (create life)
Consciousness – the awareness of life unfolding (awareness of what we create)
Mind – the universal intelligence behind life (the source of all)

Another Unlikely Hero: The Remarkable Story of YOU

But trying to explain what the 3 principles are using words alone is a bit like, well it’s a bit like trying to answer the following questions:

  • What is love?
  • The meaning of life?
  • And what is the tao?
(Hint: “The tao that can be told is not the eternal tao.” – Lao Tzu.)

So, instead let me say this: The 3 Principles are about YOU.

  • YOU are the three principles in action.
  • Through you, thinking happens, and inspiration, and awareness. Through you, love flows (as does fear). Through you, the world changes, moment by moment by moment.
  • Through your understanding of the 3 Principles you can be the change you want to see in the world.

YOU are the answer you’ve been looking for, all your life, and the 3 Principles understanding helps you see that for yourself….

Videos About The Three Principles

What I, Steve M Nash, Say

In October 2015, I decided to record 20 or so short videos on various ‘being human’ topics, as I saw it, with the Inside-Out understanding in mind (aka the three principles). So, these 3-minute videos are not describing the 3 principles directly, rather they’re my attempt to reveal – unpolished, and unrehearsed – what it actually means to be human.

So, enough from me, for now. I’ve found 2 videos on YouTube about the three principles, by 2 different gentlemen, all of which share, in their words, what each principle means to them.

So how about you listen to the wisdom contained in these videos, and take particular care to notice any good feelings you sense in your own body as you listen – those feelings are what the 3 Principles are all about, what transformativecoaching is all about

The 3 Principles – What Michael Neill Says…

So I first came across the 3 principles via Supercoach Michael Neill, in October 2012. Michael talked about the Inside Out understanding of the human experience, an understanding I was starting to ‘get’ myself more and more, via the self-help website I’d created called SelfHelpCollective.com, so I was curious to say the least.

Michael talks of living from the inside out – that is, we’re living in the feeling of our thinking, not the feeling of our circ*mstances. Here’s what he has to say about the 3 principles, then:

Day 4 - Introducing Three Principles

The Three Principles a la George Pransky…

And Michael Neill (an internationally renowned success coach in his own right – previously relying on NLP techniques & strategies) discovered the 3 principles by reading George Pransky’s outstandingly helpful The Relationship Handbook (a book written from a 3 Principles understanding).

George Pransky was one of the first mental health professionals to take what Sydney Banks was sharing with any seriousness. Yes, George listened when Syd talked, shared and wrote. And this understanding completely changed George’s life, his relationships, everything. And it continues to do so today.

And this is how George Pransky explains the 3 principles, in his own words:

The principles are an attempt to explain the most fundamental, essential nature of the human experience.
– George Pranksy

3 Principles Quotes…

Here are a few carefully selected three principles quotes…

“All we are is peace, love, and wisdom, and the power to create the illusion that we are not.”
– Jack Pransky

“Your thoughts are like the artist’s brush. They create a personal picture of the reality you live in.”
— Sydney Banks

“You’re not afraid of what you think you’re afraid of – you’re afraid of what you think.”
– Michael Neill

“The sickness of the mind are feelings that we create and put onto objects. But if you see the objects without the feelings, then you are healthy.”
– Sydney Banks

“Notice – then stop looking – the job is done.”
– Elsie Spittle

“If the only thing people learned was not to be afraid of their experience, that alone would change the world.”
– Sydney Banks

“The only trick in life is to be grateful for your highs and graceful with your lows.”
— George Pransky

“If you think anything outside is going to give it to you then you are saying it’s not inside.”
— Sydney Banks

“You can have your experience without your experience having you.”
— Linda Pransky

“Limitation is always illusion. Just wait. Relax. Stay still. Wait until the wisdom talks to you, as it will.”
— Sydney Banks

Why does The 3 Principles Understanding Matter, Then?

Simply, developing an understanding of these principles is literally life-changing and life-transforming – lifelong ‘issues’ could drop away, for example, or you could have feelings of invincibility, or life might just be ‘nicer’.

But the true extent of what this understanding can do for you has to be experienced…

For example,

  • Can YOUimagine being comfortable with uncertainty?
  • Imagine always knowing where to look for answers, being okay being wrong, being okay with ALL your experiences of life?
  • Can you imagine taking 100% responsibility for your life, even?

…Well, all thatIS available for you, right now– one thought away – via YOU and your understanding of the 3 Principles of Mind, Consciousness and Thought.

Whatever’s going on for you!

Whether it’s RELATIONSHIP issues, or it’s HEALTH concerns, or it’s MONEY worries, or you’re simply wanting PEACE OF MIND… And ALL helped by 3 simple steps:

1. Take your thinking less seriously(take things less personally)
RESULTS: You havemore peace of mind, you worry less, and you get to feel more comfortable in your own skin [Principle of Thought]

2. Become more aware of differing possibilities (increase awareness)
RESULTS: You have more perspective, you get stuck less, and you have more insights/ideas and breakthroughs [ Principle of Consciousness ]

3. Allow inspiration and new insights to be your guide (access wisdom)
RESULTS: You start to trust more, you fear less, and you get to live a more inspired and creative life [Principle of Mind ]

…This is important: understanding the 3 principles is NOT about understanding the words used to describe them!

It matters not whether you or I can explain to others what the 3 principles mean, or even why they’re important. It’s ALL about the feeling, always. And when you start to realise just how your life is unfolding, start to take responsibility for your experiences of it, something rather magical happens, it truly does…

But this is magic that cannot be explained; it is magic you have to experience for yourself.

This magic goes by another name, naturally, and that name is love. But love is just a word, too – the experience of it is everything!

“Listen for a Feeling”

Listen for a feeling, as Sydney Banks would often say, listen for a feeling.

As the feeling arises, the need for words and explanations and even understanding diminishes.

For me, then, the 3 principles is a pointer to the truth, the truth that lies within.

But ask me tomorrow about the 3 principles – what they mean and why they matter – and I may well come up with a completely different way of explaining them.

For now, let me leave with you with this inspirational quote about life (rather than the 3 Principles), some words from Ken Keyes Jr, that go like this…

“How soon will you realise that the only thing you don’t have is the direct experience that there’s nothing you need that you don’t have?”
– Ken Keyes, Jr.

The 3 Principles understanding points you within, to that direct experience.
